When Jessica Leja's wedding was canceled this spring, she was not sure what to do. An oncology nurse from Illinois, Leja decided to bring it to social media and find someone to give her beautiful, unused wedding gown. But not somebody. Someone whose situation has hit near home.
Tragedy turned heartwarming story
Two years ago, Leja lost her father to kidney cancer. She took care of him during her treatment and soon afterwards she began her career in oncology. "Oncology is my passion, my devotion, it will always have a special place in my heart for my family and my patients who have become my family," she said.
After her wedding was canceled, she knew she had to return and donate her dress to a cancer patient or survivor. "My heroes are cancer patients: the fighters, the survivors and the prisoners," said Leja. "The admiration that I feel for her is indescribable, it would really mean a lot to me to find [a patient to give it to], "
The beautiful dress
York's gorgeous, $ 1,800 wedding dress features white and ivory lace. Of course, Leja could have sold it. But she wanted to do something better.
"It's really beautiful," said Leja. "[But] this dress was not made for me. It was made for someone else. And I have to find her. "
Find the "one"
Toni Roberts, a recently committed 31-year-old mother from Tennessee, received breast cancer treatment. Roberts wrote a letter to Leja after she discovered her wedding dress story, telling Leja how she tried to be a voice of compassion and helping to inspire other cancer patients. Immediately after reading Roberts & # 39; letter, Leja knew she was the one. "I remember reading it, and to be honest I knew right away that this is my girl, then I said, I have to wait and give others a chance," Leja said. "Toni sent me pictures, told me her story, I got goosebumps, I cried, we're so close, it's crazy."
After the election, received wedding Roberts said the donation is more than just a gift. It is the beginning of a nice friendship, "She knows what I'm going through, she's been through it every day with her father and her patients," Roberts said.
