Sometimes fear can be too paralyzing to act in the midst of disaster. However, the terror did not stop this father and son from escaping a forest fire – he drove straight into it.
Terrible spread of forest fires
In recent months terrible forest and forest fires have broken out across the country, especially on the West Coast. Many have driven people out of their homes, destroyed neighborhoods, and overturned lives. However, this father-son duo did not expect to face one of these terrible natural phenomena on a simple camping trip.
On August 11, 70-year-old Charlie Bilton and his son Justin made their way to Glacier National Park in Montana. That night a storm raged through the area and started fires in the huge forest. The next day, the duo had to face one of the most terrible situations anybody has ever encountered.
Caught by terrifying flames
When Charlie and Justin rode up the North MacDonald Trail for the first time, the blaze was locked in just five acres of land. But three hours later, when they decided to go down the mountain, it was too late to escape. The Howe Ridge Fire had expanded to 2,000 acres, and the pair was completely trapped by the flames.
In a moment of panic Justin wanted to get stuck – but Charlie had another idea. He decided that it would be best to get in the car and dive into the belly of the beast, hoping to make it to the other side. At first, Justin thought his father was completely nuts. Soon, however, they set out in the scary landscape, hoping for a miracle.
Charlies spine-chilling decision
As they headed straight for a terrible fiery landscape, Justin became more anxious. "Dad, what if the car explodes?" He asked. "Then we're dead," Charlie answered calmly. "Keep driving, not too fast, nothing will happen to us." And while the terrible fire that blew around them did not slip into their vehicle, there were times when it seemed impossible to get out.
The heat in the car intensified the longer they drove through the fiery woods, and Justin feared for the collapse of the car. He almost gave up hope when they came across a heavy, burning tree in the street. Fortunately, the duo managed to turn the car to a nearby lake intensive water rescue, It is nothing less than incredible that the stubborn couple survived such an eerie, shocking event!
