Woman volunteers nearly 7,000 hours in a hospital

There are some stories that make you feel good, and this is one of them. At Morton Plant Hospital, there are thousands of people who work hard to keep people alive and to comfort them in their most difficult times. One of these people has won a special place in the collective heart of their community, and she is not even an employee. For the past 28 years, Mary Ellen Owens had volunteered at the hospital reception for over 5,000 hours.

Very special woman

Mary Ellen Owens is nine to eight years old and had a pretty exciting life. She started her work in the entertainment industry. She worked as a model in Richmond, Virginia and eventually brought her skills to the city of New York.

In New York City, she almost became a movie star, but it did not work out. However, Mrs. Owens has no regrets. Despite all the experiences she has made, many of her most cherished moments in life involve being married to her husband.

Make the most of a bad situation

About 24 years ago, her life changed forever when her husband became chronically ill. In the last years of her husband's life, the Owens spent much more time than they would have wanted in the hospital.

Their troubling experience has been brightened by the friendliness of staff and volunteers at Morton Plant Hospital. When her husband died, Owens decided to give something back to the people who had given her so much.

Deliver thousands of smiles

For more than two decades, Ms. Owen was one of the most popular volunteers in the hospital. Although her health has declined, she has reduced the time she spends in the hospital. Owens still drives to her second home for her weekly shift.


Soon, Ms. Owens will have reached the milestone of volunteering for 7,000 hours. Everyone who visits the hospital appreciates her warm smile, She looks forward to giving thousands more hours and smile,
